Why do coir mats shed?

The first cut should be light to medium pressure to score the surface then gradually get firmer as you penetrate the PVC. It will usually take 3 or 4 passes with a sharp knife to cut it.

Next, while the mat is face down roll up the mat slowly with the brush surface facing out and tap it as you roll it up, this will cause the fibers to separate and the dislodge the debris that has fallen to the base of the mat.
